The Fundamental Emotions and their Positive Survival Intent

Anger – “Anger is an integrity-producing response to the invasion of your personal boundaries.”  Gabrielle Roth

Emotions Positive – Negative Poles

All emotions experienced are signals from the Essence to Personality about the conditions related to a certain circumstance, situation, person, or in the moment. This explanation is absolutely poo-poo’ed by the established scientific community citing no evidence of an “essence” or “soul” and further validating their argument asserting that the Limbic System, that more ancient part of the brain largely the seat of the chemical messages that translate into what we refer to as emotion, stems not from a source found in the study of the supernatural or metaphysical but rather the natural world derived from the rigorous trials of evolution.

To these arguments, I simply offer this question: Why does finding no evidence of a primer mover, actually prevent it from existing? And by extrapolation, what if evolution were the means of an intelligence so incomprehensibly immense as to seem infinite, and thus undetectable? Could the method of a grand experimenter, with perfect and complete fascination with the process of creation, set mechanisms into motion with anonymity built -in?, Perhaps the ultimate form of black-box testing? If so, like all experimenters trying to gain or access into the function of a system and there achieve some handle or controls, what would be the variable that allowed for the most subtle variation of the system? One answer might be emotions themselves! Emotions defined as energy in motion,

Such a model of the functions of the physical and psychic universe would create an inter-dimensional bridge, where the animal dictates as set down in the determinants of DNA through the march of evolution; primarily: dominance, sex, and aggression, would eventually be matched, then tempered and eventually merged with another concurrent product of evolution: consciousness?. Then the great mystery turned battle between philosophy and science comes to the forefront: is consciousness a stage in evolution produced in mechanical form and merely a survival advantage of the species? Or is consciousness an dependent variable introduced into the equation of life by a prime mover to alter and enhance the and expand evolution?

Emotions in that case would serve as the perfect medium for the transference of input that in itself is a form of information but more accurately might be thought of as a commentary about the incoming stimuli or thoughts held about stimuli. The race toward the rational, is so littered with the unconscious penchants of the animal instincts model of thinking as to render all forms of art and conception to the level of tool making for survival advantage. Strong emotions were once only evoked as the triggering device for fight, flight, freeze or fuck. Now, let’s introduce the last of these: freedom!

When we understand that emotions are more than chemistry to be controlled by our minds, often suppressed, discounted, or at the other extreme, channeled into acts that defeat their purpose to inform and instruct us; then we begin to be free from their effects by expanding consciousness to have the freedom to choose how to exercise them. To often, what passes for rational schemes embedded in social norms or mores to cope with or moderate the inputs of emotion infer one should exorcise emotion, as if that would be a solution to human ills. The point is, the part of what enhances the finest parts of our humanity: compassion, art, creativity, and ethical behavior what we might groups together as the humane side of our nature, stems ALSO from emotion!

Thus, the implication of my speech is: We must learn to recognize the positive and negative attributes of all emotion, learn to respond to them instead of react to them (which includes denial and avoidance). The very existence of an emotional with its roots sunk deep in the evolutionary firmament bodes for a “pro-survival” aspect of each of these. Yet, in modern, industrial, civilized, herd organization which all of us are a part of, the once-upon-a-time context in which each of these emotions emerged have changed and therefore their dictates often distort current reality and may be deemed “inappropriate” to the time and place.

Hope –  + Hope is the emotional state that reminds us to look forward. Stirring elements that fire possibilities other than ones which predict disaster. Sustained action is served in the presence of hope, but it can only produce the climate, not makes the crop you’ve planted grow. Going out into the rain to weed, hoe, or tend the garden, can seem daunting and uncomfortable, but with hope, you are covered in an umbrella that makes the worst storms seem manageable.

– When hope is not a strategy to act, it is merely the grease which may allow the wheels to turn with less friction. Substituting hope for a plan is the single biggest trap that this emotion offers. Like an addiction to “good feeling”, the moments may succor the pain of living, but in the end, the disease of inaction will linger and produce a terminal sense of futility. Hope used in this way, produces nothing, but it does distract attention from the pain of them immediate circumstance.

Hopelessness – + Hopelessness offers a moment of deflation. All that remains is the reality of the situation unembellished but perhaps overly devalued. The trick with hopelessness is to pick up the threads that remain and see how they tie together or may be tied together.

Love –  + Of all the bonding agents in the Universe, love acts as the most ubiquitous and naturally occurring. Motivating parent child bonding, matedness, friendship, altruism, and fealty to nation, and camaraderie with others, love forms a matrix facilitating the transfer of emotion and support between beings. Evolution portends this manifestation of the atomistic force in order to bridge the divine and the mundane.

– But love also can blind. A malleable force, it bends and sways and enters into liquid states but offers nothing firm and may drown those who cannot see. Love becomes possessive, delusional, sentimental and permissive. When love is blind, the bearer of it gives themselves away in the name of it, becoming a feeding source to all who will drain them. Such “co-dependence” puts both parties not in cooperation, but entanglement.

Anger + Ignites the fury which focuses attention, accepts no distractions and clears all illusions. Anger offers no forgiveness and no excuses. When it is contained and directed, it holds the key for directed action that is precise, and unstoppable. The truth as the person knows it comes

– When hot anger turns into rage, it may unleash a destructive onslaught that may be violent or supremely terse and answers few questions. Retribution instead of restitution becomes the focus where a fixation upon vengeance pushes reason out the door and nothing but incomprehensibility remains.

Hate + It is difficult to imagine such a foul smelling and malignant growth having any redeeming value. But in the extreme of cold, calculated, derision, the person or thing can be reduced to point of enmity so pernicious, that nothing can intercede in the destruction of the object hated. In war, hate serves to make a soldier impervious to fear, relentless in pursuit, vicious in its onslaught. In the case of those soldiers who fought against totalitarianism or women who battled rapists, it took reaching this low point of human understanding to shift into the killer, and thus seek to destroy that which is perceived as evil. Yes, it is by it’s nature, a propellant that corrodes the vessel as well as the receiver of the acidic malice.

Fear + Fear can raise the alarm and activates the senses to full alert.

Shame –+ The journey inward is one that many people resist. Shame pulls doleful attention toward the self. Triggered by remorse, the shivering question of worth leaps at the face of your identity like a tiger ready to tear flesh on its way to bone. When it strikes you have the chance to take the pain and toughen the meddle of your soul. Converting shame only becomes necessary because the fire of dignity has been temporarily drenched by the inferiority, inadequacy, or loathing. Use these sliming oozes as a wax, polish the core of who you are and bring yourself and rise once again like a phoenix from the ashes.

Negative Shame, as John Bradshaw might intone, is toxic poison that slashes the psyche fragmenting the soul and ego, making the former mute to latter while it suffers in harrowing torment of self doubt. No hell is as real as falling into abasement.

Guilt –+ Fruition of guilt brings about a sense of unease because you are alerted that you have created an imbalance.

Distinction between Emotions appearing to be similar

Love vs Like – Loving someone does not require liking them. Like has a preferential factor. It means that something you are attracted to in another person fits well within your range of acceptability. However, love requires an emotional investment that is not automatically engaged when liking someone. Like lets us know who we might choose to acquaint ourselves with, but it does not mean we form the deeper ties that bind like the mutual experience of family, friend, lover or comrade,

Anger vs. Hatred – Anger can be summoned to defend. Hatred however is the fuel by which someone justifies attack.
