Implications in the Upright Position or Positive Pole

To watch a plant, a child, a business, or relationship grow is to witness progress, branching, and advancement. The outstretched hand holding the plant indicates that in order for something that we humans consider important to mature, it takes a guiding hand. Once we comprehend this governing factor of successful growth, then like that seedling we can develop into a mighty tree.

Card messages in the Illuminated position.

+ Comprehension

(Expansion, acceleration, propulsion, advancement, progression, consolidation, maturation, development, ontogeny, accumulation, increase, incremental, emergence, genesis, addition, multiplication, flourish,  enlargement, maximization, furtherance)

  1. Comprehension requires challenging life and contemplating the results. All Centers are activated by conflict or excitement or adventure. Experience expands the potential for advancement. Try gathering new data and notice if your understanding changes.
  2. Life doesn’t always require you to do anything for comprehension to occur. It might be that as people or situations around you change you come to understand who they are what was going on more clearly. This is true for a parent and child. Is someone you’ve nurtured finally comprehending things more completely? Cherish and reward it.
  3. Get to the point with someone and leave nothing ambiguous.
  4. “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” Whoever said this realized that paying attention to the lesson is essential for maturity. Are you?
  5. Even when something is strenuous, and you don’t know if you can succeed; if you do it with the commitment to becoming a better you, then both love and growth will be served.
  6. Dynamic tension is a type of useful stress. It can pull you forward. Use it for your betterment.
  7.  Allow growth to be strategic and progressive. Fanning a fire may extinguish it or flare it into an inferno.
  8. Career advancement is the growth you’ve been hoping for. Coming up soon will be a chance to go in a direction that you hadn’t thought about, but will definitely move things forward.
Historic Quotes signifying the quality of the Overleaf in this pole
  • “I have the capacity and therefore the duty to contribute to the development of myself, my associates, and our planet, simultaneously, now!”  Mind Wars by Ronald McRae
  • “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.” Benjamin Franklin
  • “Love dies only when growth stops.” Pearl S. Buck
  • “Socialization, …means the developmental process of learning to relate positively and constructively on a broad range of tasks with a broader range of people.” James Champy in Reengineering Management.

Implications of the Reversed Position or Negative Pole

If there is one problem with the energy of growth, it is when it floods in upon one from all directions. The confusion that is brought by new situations can feel overwhelming and it can produce as many suggestions for solution as there are people involved in the process. This image, like the compass in the positive pole Re-evaluation, shows us directions – too many! Yet unlike that compass where you make a choice and go, in confusion what usually happens is you run around in circles, or, disperse your energies in too many directions at once.

Card messages associated with Shadow position

– Confusion

(overwhelm, dissociation, exhaustion, depletion, stress, cancer, distortion, diffusion. dilution, bloated, magnification, escalation, build-up, inflation, proliferation, augmentation, amassing, stockpiling)

  1. Cancer is a form of growth, but one not desirable. cancer cells overwhelm and confuse the body’s ability to cope, because too much has been activated at once.
  2. Just moving around the furniture without giving anything away, is not growth, just motion.
  3. The solution requires prioritizing, concerted action, surrendering, and faith, each in right measure.
  4. Burnout is the result of unrestrained growth. If you have overextended in the name of growth, it may be time to re-evaluate why you are on a dead run, before you keel over.
  5. A surge of omni-directional energy is the hallmark of this card. Direct it as fuel or it will be chaos.
  6. You’ve heard that the “devil is in the details”? Well, just make sure to write them down so that all hell doesn’t break loose when you need to access them.
  7. A growth spurt is natural for a child. You cope by making sure by keeping up with the changes with new clothes. Don’t let the changes make you feel awkward in your own skin.
  8. All change is not growth. All movement is not forward. If you think about the implications of this, you’ll understand the 2008 stock market crash. Remember this example and this lesson, and then you will comprehend real growth.
Historic Quotes signifying the quality of the Overleaf in this pole
  • “There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.” Dahlia Lama
  • “The older I grow the more I distrust the familiar doctrine that age brings wisdom.” Benjamin Franklin
  • “All change is not growth; as all movement is not forward.” Ellen Glasgow
  • “All experiences on the physical plane stimulate growth and education. The more experiences you have, the greater the wisdom you can gather. Some experiences, however, are so huge and primal that they affect you at every level of being: emotional, physical, psychological, and spiritual. Such an experience can leave you gasping and lost in a vast sea of stimuli.” Michael through JP Van Hulle – Facebook post – 4-6-16

Relevance within the Michael Teaching

Growth as a Goal is the most widely chosen. It confers upon the Personality as curiosity and in some cases a relentless push to experience more. Growth may be used in a generalized or broadcast way as if an Essence wanted to taste everything at a smorgasbord. Or, depending upon its combination with other Overleaves, and the Soul Age of the person involved, may be focused as an accelerant to move into a new area of life experience that has yet to be explored with any depth.

Growth as a Goal in The Michael Teaching - From even the smallest seedlings grow mighty trees

Growth is often confused with evolution which implies advancement. All of the Goals augment or support evolution in specific ways, but not always by expansion of comprehension which is the hallmark of this Goal. Indeed, taking note of the dinosaurs we realize that planet herself advances in time and space but eliminated those life forms for its evolution. Growth is a forward motion. It is also one that tends to acquire: things, experiences, and relationships. Whereas its partner, Re-evaluation, balances the equation by taking stock of those learned or acquired features and will attempt to simplify data down to its simplest formulation. By analogy, it is the interaction of eating food (Growth) and Re-evaluation separating the nutrients into useful products with nourish the blood.

Cultural Relevance

So many opportunities - Growth as defined in the Michael TeachingLook around at societies that place high worth upon change. There you may note a preponderance of souls who are in Growth. The motivation compels and might be said to be “a force to be reckoned with.” Growth, in spite of dogma perpetuate by ideologues of the faith in economics, is seldom rational! Rationalized perhaps? It is merely the generator. Like flood waters which drown the lowest points first, any idea driven by Growth alone may feel inspiring, but quite frequently lacks a well healed process of thought. And when we speak of thought, do not confuse it with the connivance that is the mind of Greed. The Chief Feature of Greed and the Goal of Growth are often chosen in tandem for their effect as to make the person hunger for the thing that they must do.

Lauded as the end goal of Capitalistic enterprise, the view that growth is always desirable portends the excuse of growth at all costs. We have reached a time where virtually everyone is told that to advance, meaning improve, we must achieve more and upon that we must grow. More, more, more! At a time when re-evaluation is called for, more than ever we hitch our cart to a horse near death like in the book Black Beauty. If the horse dies, (economic collapse) it will not mean that the story is over, but that we find another way to draw the cart (distribute resources).

Growth might be your Goal if…

  1.  I can hardly stop myself from learning something new, especially if it is interesting to me.
  2. A change is almost always useful thing.
  3. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by the number of things I have on my to do list.
  4. When I am going in several directions at once, I can forget or get confused easier than I’d like to admit.
  5. Self development for personal advancement is vital to my sense of a satisfying life.
  6. One problem I have is to narrow the scope of something when all the opportunities seem fascinating or exciting.
  7. Life can get ahead of me sometimes and I feel caught in a whirlpool of activity.
  8. It is easy to perceive that there are too many choices, too many obstacles, or too many reasons to feel stuck.
